Happy Birthday, Boys: “Infertility Unplugged” by the Numbers

At this time 11 years ago, I was crying into my shoes…literally.  Bloated as a waterbed, I tried desperately over my pregnant tummy to reach my shoes and shove my swollen feet into them.  Time was of the essence; I needed to commute an hour away to sit for my recertification exam and shoes were a necessity in the frigid Wisconsin winter (and probably in the exam center, too).  Fortunately my husband came to my rescue, armed with a shoe horn and sheer determination. It’s hard for me to believe my twin boys will turn 11 in a matter of…

Too Much Information: a Conception Story

“So what is your birth story?”   Have you ever shared with someone the story of how your children came into the world?  I remember a friend of mine and I doing just that on one of the rare occasions we could sit and catch up.  It was an enlightening personal experience, one I would never think to initiate and was glad she took the first step.  The actual birthing experience may be a small fraction of life experience but it ends in the first time we lay eyes on our children, so it’s a story we as parents hold…

To Ski or Not to Ski (Silly Question?)

There’s snow up in the mountains, the annual ski swap is the “happening” hot spot and ski school is booked (don’t tell my kids…for some unknown reason they want to ski with Dad and Mom).  Everyone in our southwestern Colorado town is counting down the days until the official start of (downhill) ski season.  That is, unless you are one of those hard core individuals who enjoys the relatively insane sport of backcountry skiing, then you have been schussing for a few weeks now.

The stunning paralytic effect of those two words kept us from swooping in and immediately rectifying what had gone terribly wrong.  Our reaction, or…

Hooray for Summer (Exclamation Point): Steps to a Successful Break (Question Mark)

A year ago, as the school year drew to an end, I wrote a post that received some flak.  In Hooray for Summer? (In retrospect, Horrors, It’s Summer! would have been a fun title…) I described the difficult transition for parents, myself wholeheartedly included, to having the kiddos home for three months.  I outlined my plan to keep us all from going crazy, which, it ends up, was a near-total flop.  Disappointing, to say the least…I needed a solid strategy because I was really not looking forward to the loss of (forgive me) my freedom. But this year?  I am…
